HITACHI RAIL SUCCESFULLY COMMISSIONS TAIPEI CIRCULAR LINE PHASE 1 DRIVERLESS METRO

Hitachi Rail successfully commissions Taipei Circular line Phase 1 Driverless Metro The first section of Taipei's fully automatic mass rapid transit Circular line has been successfully commissioned by Hitachi Rail, and had entered into commercial service on 31 January 2020.

This is the first Systems Turnkey project, incorporating both the trains and all sub-systems necessary to operate the Metro line, to be delivered by Hitachi Rail in the Far East.

The driverless system developed by Hitachi Rail for the new 15.4km line, uses Communication Based Train Control to the highest grade of automation (CBTC GoA 4) to optimise system safety, reliability and efficiency.

Hitachi Rail has also supplied the 17 newly-developed trains for the Taipei Circular line. Designed to achieve elevated levels of performance in terms of operation costs, passenger comfort, capacity, service availability and reliability, the 17 four-aluminium-car medium-capacity trains can carry up to 650 passengers and travel at up to 80km/h.

This first section of the Circular line extends from Dapinglin Station to the New Taipei Industrial Park Station, and connects with trains passing through the New Taipei City districts of Xindian, Zhonghe, Banqiao, and Xinzhuang. It includes 14 stations and a depot, and is the first stage in what will become a 52km mass rapid transit line that will enable commuters to travel directly from outer Taipei and New Taipei City, without having to first connect in downtown Taipei.

Hitachi Rail Group CEO Andrew Barr said the company was very pleased to have commissioned the first stage of the Circular line for the Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORT) and to have supplied the vehicles for the line.

This project really tested and brought together the global concept of mixed functional teams from diverse geographical and cultural settings coming together glued by “shared values” and a single focus to support the delivery team on the ground successfully bring to fruition Hitachi Rail’s first System Turnkey project in Taiwan and the Far East in the true spirit of One –Hitachi!. “The CBTC G0A 4 solution we have developed for the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) is the first of its kind in Taiwan ushering in a new era in driverless technology for the Taipei and New Taipei City metro authorities.

Hitachi Rail is currently delivering several other mobility projects in Taiwan. These include the delivery of the Sanying line, the first medium-capacity metro to be constructed and managed by New Taipei City and the provision of 600 cars of Express trains for the Taiwan Railway Authority (TRA) intercity rail network.

Hitachi Rail expects its current backlog and expected future orders to cumulatively amount to in excess of USD 3 Billion making Taiwan a very strategic market for Hitachi Rail.
