A Siemens Mobility-led consortium comprising ELSITEL and IMSAT has been awarded three contracts valued at approximately EUR 308 million to modernize railway signaling and interlocking systems across Romania. Awarded by Romania's national railway infrastructure manager CFR SA through competitive public procurement, the program covers signaling modernization across approximately 560 kilometers of railway lines.
Scope of Modernization Contracts
The three contracts represent one of the most comprehensive signaling modernization programs in Romania. The projects encompass the upgrade of signaling infrastructure across 66 railway stations, 13 centralized operation centers, 122 level crossings, and more than 2,000 signals.
The modernization work spans railway sections and stations situated within the Cluj, Timișoara, Iași, and Galați regional railway branches.
Replacement of Legacy Interlocking Infrastructure
The program replaces legacy signaling equipment that has exceeded its original operational design lifecycle. Existing mechanical and electrodynamic interlocking systems, with components dating back several decades, are being replaced with modern signaling and traffic management technologies.
The technological upgrades are designed to enhance operational safety, track capacity, system reliability, and overall network performance.
Environmental Objectives and Transport Infrastructure
In addition to increasing operational performance, the projects align with Romanian and European Union policy goals to expand rail transport as a sustainable mobility infrastructure. By increasing the efficiency and reliability of passenger and freight rail services, the signaling modernization program aims to facilitate a transport modal shift from road to rail, supporting long-term decarbonization objectives.
