Stadler to Deliver FLIRT Trains to Greater Poland

Stadler Rail has signed a contract with the Marshal’s Office of the Greater Poland Province to supply up to 20 FLIRT electric multiple units (EMUs) for regional and agglomeration rail services.

The agreement includes 10 five-car FLIRT trains with an option for an additional 10 units, with the first vehicles scheduled to enter service in early 2028. The contract is valued at approximately €263 million.

Modern trains for regional transport
The new trains will be built in Poland by Stadler Polska and are designed to enhance passenger comfort while reducing energy consumption and operating costs.

The five-car electric multiple units will offer capacity for up to 632 passengers, including more than 250 seats, and will operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h.

Key onboard features include:

  • ETCS Level 2 train control system
  • Air conditioning and CCTV monitoring
  • Passenger information systems
  • Wireless internet connectivity
  • Accessibility features for passengers with reduced mobility
  • Defibrillators and emergency intercom systems

The vehicles will also provide spacious entrance areas and a high proportion of low-floor space, improving accessibility for wheelchair users, cyclists, and passengers with strollers.

Designed and engineered locally
Engineering teams from Stadler Polska—including specialists based in Poznań—will design the trains specifically for Greater Poland.

The project will strengthen local engineering capabilities in the region, where Stadler currently employs around 100 engineers, with additional recruitment planned to support future projects.

Proven FLIRT platform
The FLIRT (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train) platform is Stadler’s best-selling train family, with more than 3,000 vehicles sold in 24 countries worldwide.

In Poland, FLIRT trains already operate with several rail operators, including:

  • Koleje Mazowieckie
  • Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna
  • Koleje Śląskie
  • PKP Intercity

The trains feature lightweight aluminum construction, enabling lower energy consumption and reduced environmental impact compared with traditional steel-bodied rail vehicles.

Stadler’s growing presence in Poland
Stadler Rail has been active in Poland since 2006, expanding its footprint through local production, engineering, and service facilities.

The company now employs more than 2,000 people in Poland across:

  • Production plants in Siedlce, Środa Wielkopolska, and Białystok
  • Engineering offices in Poznań, Siedlce, and Warsaw
  • Service centers in Łódź and Sochaczew

The new train order further strengthens Stadler’s role in supporting sustainable public transport development in Poland.
