Alstom and Mälardalen University (MDU) have renewed their strategic partnership to further integrate research, education and industrial application in support of sustainable rail innovation. The agreement, signed on 3 February, builds on ten years of collaboration aimed at strengthening Sweden’s industrial competitiveness and accelerating the transition toward low-carbon mobility.
Research Integration and Industrial Application
The partnership connects academic research directly with industrial development activities within Alstom’s Swedish operations, including its global research and innovation centres. Over the past decade, joint projects have translated research outcomes into applied industrial solutions, particularly in areas linked to digitalisation and sustainability.
The collaboration focuses on maintaining core engineering competencies while expanding expertise in emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and circular design. By embedding research within operational environments, the partners aim to shorten innovation cycles and enable agile development processes aligned with evolving rail sector requirements.
Industry–Education Pathways
A central component of the partnership is early industry exposure for students. Through direct engagement with Alstom’s facilities and projects, students gain insight into current and future mobility challenges. This practical integration strengthens workforce readiness and aligns academic curricula with industrial needs.
MDU, Sweden’s newest university with approximately 19,000 students in the Mälardalen region, leverages collaboration with global industrial players to ensure relevance of its education and research activities. The renewed agreement includes plans to expand industry-linked education pathways and increase student participation in applied research initiatives.
Lifelong Learning and Talent Development
In addition to student engagement, the partnership emphasizes lifelong learning for professionals. Structured programs enable employees to continuously develop competencies in rapidly evolving technical fields, supporting organizational adaptability.
The combination of a steady talent pipeline, joint research projects and continuous professional development contributes to an integrated ecosystem where education and industry co-evolve. This model is designed to support long-term sustainability goals while reinforcing Sweden’s position in smart and sustainable rail mobility.
By formalizing the next phase of collaboration, Alstom and MDU aim to strengthen the link between academic innovation and industrial deployment, accelerating the green transition in the rail sector through coordinated research, talent development and applied engineering.
