ÖBB expands fleet of battery-electric regional trains

ÖBB has placed an additional order for FLIRT Akku battery-electric multiple units from Stadler, reinforcing its strategy to modernize regional rail services and reduce emissions. The trains will enable zero-emission operation on non-electrified railway lines, supporting the transition away from diesel-powered rolling stock.

Starting with the 2029 timetable year, the new battery-electric trains will gradually replace existing diesel units in Lower Austria, including services on the Kamptalbahn and Erlauftalbahn lines.

Framework agreement and order expansion
The new order forms part of a framework agreement signed in July 2023 between ÖBB and Stadler for up to 120 FLIRT Akku units. The first call-off included 16 trains intended for operation on the Kamptalbahn line. The latest call-off represents the next step in implementing the agreement and expanding the battery-electric fleet.

The order reflects the continued collaboration between the two companies in developing low-emission solutions for regional rail transport.

Technical concept and passenger features
The FLIRT Akku platform combines electric traction with onboard battery technology, enabling operation both under overhead catenary systems and on non-electrified routes. When running on electrified sections, the train draws power from the overhead line and can simultaneously recharge its batteries. On sections without electrification, it operates in fully battery-electric mode.

Each train offers more than 160 passenger seats and includes barrier-free access, large multifunctional areas for wheelchairs, bicycles and prams, as well as onboard power outlets and USB-C charging ports.

Environmental impact
The introduction of seven additional FLIRT Akku units is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption compared with the diesel trains they replace. According to ÖBB, the new trains will save approximately 500,000 litres of diesel per year, resulting in a reduction of around 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

This corresponds roughly to the annual energy consumption of about 300 single-family homes.

Contribution to sustainable regional mobility
By expanding its fleet of battery-electric trains, ÖBB continues its strategy of reducing emissions and improving the environmental performance of regional rail services. The cooperation with Stadler supports the deployment of modern rolling stock designed to combine operational flexibility, passenger comfort and lower environmental impact.

The latest order further strengthens the long-standing partnership between ÖBB and Stadler while contributing to the development of climate-friendly regional rail mobility in Austria.
