Liebherr Showcases Sustainable Rail HVAC and Brake Systems at Forum

The Railway Forum 2025, Europe's leading management conference for the railroad industry, will open its gates from September 2 to 4, at the Estrel Convention Center in Berlin (Germany). At its booth no H02/H03 Liebherr will be showcasing solutions for the rail industry such as more sustainable HVAC technology and an electro-hydraulic brake actuator. The latter had been jointly developed with Siemens.

“We are delighted to take part in the exhibition again this year and to have the opportunity to welcome our customers, partners and visitors,” said Roland Friedrich, Deputy General Manager/Business Management Liebherr-Transportation Systems Mannheim GmbH. “We are working every day to make the mobility sector more sustainable and to facilitate the seamless transition to a more ecofriendly and comfortable passenger transport.”

HVAC system with natural refrigerant
Liebherr-Transportation Systems is working intensively on the use of more sustainable refrigerants compared to conventional ones and is adapting its HVAC systems technology accordingly. Proof is the driver’s cab HVAC system on display at the Railway Forum, which uses the natural refrigerant propane (R290). It enables more sustainable cooling and, in terms of operating pressure and energy consumption, is very similar to the refrigerant R134 used so far. The corresponding technical concept takes into account all relevant safety requirements such as the flammability of the refrigerant.

On-board the air-free Siemens Brake System
Also on display: an electro-hydraulic brake actuator, which provides the brake force for the brake system. In close collaboration with Siemens Liebherr developed and produces compact, closed, electrohydraulic brake actuators including all the components necessary to build-up and release the brake force as well as local control. The brake actuator is integrated into the bogie in the same installation space and has the same mechanical interfaces as the conventional pneumatic brake caliper. Liebherr’s brake actuator meets the highest safety requirements as well as the Safety Integrity Levels up to SIL4 and also the latest rules and regulations for safety verification.
