The agreement establishes Hitachi Rail as SYMCA's long-term strategic technology partner for the Supertram network. It marks another milestone in SYMCA's plans to futureproof the region's light rail infrastructure and enhance passenger services, connecting communities and helping to build a bigger and better economy.

Andy Bell, Vice President and GTS Managing Director, Hitachi Rail UK, said: "This 15-year partnership represents more than a contract, it's a long-term commitment to South Yorkshire. We're bringing together our globally proven technologies, transformational delivery expertise, and local presence in the South Yorkshire region to help deliver a stronger, smarter Supertram network for the future."

Tom Howard, Director of Transport Development and Capital Delivery, from SYMCA, said: "Supertram is a key component of the South Yorkshire public transport network, and since operations returned to our control last year, we have set out a programme of investment to ensure the system is fit for the future." He added, "This strategic partnership with Hitachi will ensure we can work collaboratively to harness the latest technology from an internationally experienced supplier in the Light Rail sector, delivering real benefits for our passengers over the lifetime of the framework. We look forward to starting work together, which over the first couple of years will initially focus on systems to improve the reliability of timetable delivery alongside enhanced real-time information, making journeys smoother and more predictable for passengers."

Mark Smalley, Sales and Business Development Director, Hitachi Rail, said: "Our partnership with SYMCA will help modernise the Supertram systems and deliver real, tangible benefits for passengers. This is about more than just replacing old systems; it's about transforming how people experience public transport in Sheffield and South Yorkshire. This framework enables us to introduce innovation and deliver long-term value to a network that's vital to the region's future. Our team is looking forward to getting started with delivering improvements that passengers will see and feel every day for many years to come."

Under the framework, Hitachi Rail will support the renewal of core Supertram systems, providing modern, digitally enabled solutions that enhance operational performance and passenger experience. The partnership aligns with SYMCA's broader strategy to create a world-class public transport network for South Yorkshire and drive growth to create a cleaner, greener, healthier, wealthier and happier South Yorkshire.

With more than 200 employees based in Doncaster, Hitachi Rail brings a strong local footprint alongside its global rail expertise. The new framework is expected to create further opportunities for local jobs, skills development and supply chain engagement in the North of England.
