Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, hosted a site visit for stakeholders and media representatives to showcase the progress of the construction of its new electric locomotive service depot in Arys, a key railway hub located along the Middle Corridor.
The Arys depot is one of four service facilities being developed under the Investment Agreement signed in 2023 between Alstom and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2025, Alstom inaugurated a depot in Shu and launched construction of a similar facility in Astana. An existing service depot is also in operation in Almaty.
The new facility will service electric locomotives manufactured by Alstom for the national railway operator JSC “NC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy”.
Once operational, the depot will be capable of servicing up to 120 locomotives section per month (or 1440 per year). The project is expected to increase locomotive availability up to 97%, improving the reliability and efficiency of rail operations both domestically and along international routes.
Strategically located in Arys, the depot will strengthen its role as a service hub on the Middle Corridor - a key transport route connecting China and Europe via Kazakhstan.
Within the framework of the Investment Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Alstom, an investment program totaling €50 million is being implemented to develop regional service centers, particular in Astana, Arys, Shu and Almaty. The establishment of these service centers will enhance the efficiency and reliability of railway maintenance operations across country. As part of the project, approximately 700 new jobs will be created, contributing to regional economic growth and employment.
The event was attended by Yertai Altayev, Deputy Akim of Turkestan Region, Sylvain Guiaugue, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Kazakhstan, as well as representatives of the Arys City Akimat, “KTZ - Freight Transportation” LLP, “KTZ - Passenger Locomotives” LLP and the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
During the visit, guests were presented with the current construction progress, key functional areas of the future depot, and visualizations of the completed facility. Alstom representatives also highlighted the technologies to be implemented, including advanced solutions for diagnostics, maintenance and repair.
“Developing service infrastructure for electric locomotive is key to Kazakhstan transport ambition and economy, because beyond the evident CO2 reduction, electrical locomotive operating cost is much lower than diesel ,” - said Jérôme Boyet, Managing Director of Alstom in Western and Central Asia.
Alstom has been active in Kazakhstan’s railway sector since 2010. With over 1,300 employees in the country, the company plays a pivotal role in national transport and infrastructure development. As the sole manufacturer of electric locomotives in Central Asia and the Caucasus, Alstom operates seven industrial sites across four cities, including a locomotive assembly plant in Astana and multiple service depots nationwide.
The company continues to expand its presence in Kazakhstan by developing service infrastructure and supporting the country’s growing transit potential.
