The Metro Line 6 is one of the busiest on the Madrid network, and its circular route plays an important role in passengers getting around the Spanish capital. Its operator, Metro de Madrid, has started automation work aimed at improving transport frequency and capacity.

As part of this automation, which is designed to implement a driverless control system GoA 4 and platform screen doors, Metro de Madrid has engaged the services of the SYSTRA-Ardanuy JV to provide specialised technical assistance for system integration.

"This new contract is significant in more ways than one: It is our first major order for the Madrid Metro, after many other contracts for the Bilbao and Barcelona networks and we are supporting the first automation of an existing metro line in Spain. This is an experience in which SYSTRA is a specialist with many similar contracts in Europe and worldwide. Thanks to Metro de Madrid for entrusting this work to SYSTRA and Ardanuy".
Joan Serrano, Vice President, SYSTRA Ibérica

Special attention to the early phases of the project

The teams’ first task will be to provide Metro de Madrid with the methodology and documentation necessary to ensure full integration of all subsystems from a technical, functional, operational, and safety perspective.

Once the synchronisation, along with the functional and technical integration processes are in place, we will support the project by following the integration through to implementation. Automation will increase speed, efficiency, and the number of trains. It will also reduce switches and maximizing operational fluidity.

Metro line automation: a major asset for SYSTRA’s expertise

This is a new metro automation for SYSTRA in Europe, following the contract won earlier this year in Stockholm, Sweden, on Line 6. The Group is leading similar projects on three continents:

. In Brussels, Belgium, on lines 1 and 5, and in Marseille and Lyon, France, with the Line D upgrade;
. In India for the Mumbai Metro;
. And in the United States for the metros of San Francisco and New York.

SYSTRA teams have previously been involved in large parts of metro automations carried out in France (Line 1 in Paris, Line B in Lyon) and in Chile (Line 1 in Santiago).

SYSTRA in Spain: a growing presence for over 25 years

Our first assignments in the Iberian Peninsula date back to the 1990s. But since the integration of Subterra into the SYSTRA Group, and the creation of SYSTRA Ibérica in 2023, our activities in the country have truly developed. Our specialists are involved in several high-speed and complex infrastructure schemes for ADIF (Railway Infrastructure Administration) and other public and private clients.

In parallel, SYSTRA is developing activities in the metro domain. This includes for the Barcelona network with the supervision of the automation of Barcelona Line 9, as well as the continuation of the Technical Assistance for the Bilbao Metro, a long-lasting client of SYSTRA since the 2000s.
