Battersea Pier Eastern Junction renewal

VolkerRail has success rebuilt Battersea Pier Eastern Junction, replacing 600 metres of track and seven switches and crossings units, along with installing 1,200 metres of new conductor rail and 6,000 metres of signalling and telecommunications cable

This significant undertaking aims to improve the rail network in the Southern region, allowing more trains to run, increasing line speed and improving reliability to reduce future delays for passengers.The work was undertaken across consecutive weekends, culminating in a blockade over Easter, with final works completed over the weekend.

Batter Pier Junction is a key milestone in year two of the control period for Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE). VolkerRail is the track delivery partner for SRE; helping to deliver the southern region’s £9bn renewals portfolio between 2024 and 2034.After visiting Battersea Pier over the Easter weekend, Mark Killick, director - engineering and asset management for Network Rail’s Southern Region and SRE Capable Owner, shared: "This junction supports hundreds of thousands of customer journeys each week. While there is never a good time to close the railway, this upgrade work is essential to make our railway more reliable.

“VolkerRail made great progress removing the track junction and all the ballast that supports it. Just 48 hours later, the track was back in place, ready to be welded together.

"This was just one of many important projects delivered across the Southern region this Easter weekend. A huge thank you to all our teams delivering these vital railway upgrades”

Commenting, VolkerRail’s Depot Lead, Paul Connor, said: “VolkerRail continues to deliver track renewals week-in-week-out for the Southern Renewals Enterprise. The work at Battersea Pier was a substantial achievement, made possible thanks to the continued efforts of the Tonbridge delivery team, supported by VolkerRail Kirow cranes.” Over the Easter weekend, SRE completed 70 on track sites in possessions, 13 on track sites in line blockages and 43 off track sites.
