ÖBB ORDERS 16 NEW BATTERY-POWERED MULTIPLE UNITS FOR KAMPTALBAHN

ÖBB is ordering 16 electrically operated Cityjet battery-powered multiple units, thus ensuring further growth in the local and regional transport fleet. The trains are expected to run along the Kamptalbahn in Lower Austria from 2028.

Using battery-powered multiple units saves up to 1.7 million litres of diesel per year. This corresponds to around 4,250 tonnes of CO2. For comparison: that is the annual CO2 consumption of around 600 Austrians. At the same time, travellers in Lower Austria will benefit from shorter journey times due, among other things, to the faster acceleration of the vehicles.

On the move with the most modern features
The new Cityjet battery-powered multiple units, which are manufactured at the Stadler site in Bussnang, are three-part, around 63 meters long and can travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h. With an expected 160 seats, the new trains offer more capacity, which is particularly needed for the heavily frequented trains at peak times.

Accessibility has also been ensured: two wheelchair spaces with accompanying spaces and a barrier-free toilet guarantee a pleasant journey for people with limited mobility. The barrier-free entrances at the same level make it easier for cyclists to get in and out. These now also have more parking spaces available, as the sets offer space for up to twelve bicycles or up to eight strollers. Particularly important for commuters: the sets are equipped with WiFi, sockets at the seats and folding tables at the row seats. The multi-purpose areas can be used variably and enable the transport of large pieces of luggage.

The equipment of the battery-powered multiple units at a glance:

  • Stroller parking spaces at each entry area (except wheelchair-accessible strollers for people with limited mobility)
  • Parking spaces for up to 12 bicycles
  • 2 wheelchair spaces
  • Info monitors with a modern passenger information system
  • Sufficient storage space for luggage
