Alstom and Infra.To present the livery of Metro Turin's new Line 1 at EXPO Ferroviaria
Alstom's autonomous train will be 52 meters long and is designed to accommodate about 320 passengers.
Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, and Infra.To, a company owned by the City of Turin and concessionaire of the Metro Line 1, presented at Alstom's booth E48 at EXPO Ferroviaria in Milan, the new Metropolis™ train that will enter service on the Turin Metro Line 1 with the activation of the "Collegno-Cascine Vica" West Extension starting in 2025. The event was attended by Infra.To President and CEO Bernardino Chiaia, Transport Councillor of the City of Turin Chiara Foglietta and General Manager of Alstom Italy and President and CEO of Alstom Ferroviaria Michele Viale.
Characteristics of the new Metropolis train
Aesthetically, the livery of the new train will echo the colours of the city of Turin: yellow and blue.
Internally, the new trains will feature a total capacity of 320 passengers and will be equipped with inter-communicating carriages that will provide greater comfort, better accessibility, and easier movement within the vehicles. Passengers will also benefit from a better travel experience thanks to the innovative permanent LED lighting system and multimedia screens that will enable better dissemination of information.
Metro trains will also include dedicated areas for people with reduced mobility, and an integrated video surveillance system will improve passenger safety during travel.
Great effort has been put into sustainability: the new trains are designed to be 96 percent recyclable and will have high-performance traction equipment, helping to improve energy efficiency.
In February 2022, Alstom was awarded a €156 million turnkey contract with Infra.To to supply the latest-generation Urbalis driverless CBTC system intended for the extension and modernization of Line 1 of the Turin Metro, along with four new Metropolis trains. The contract also includes an option for an additional 12 trains worth an additional €145 million.
CBTC system
This contract represents an innovation for public transportation in the city of Turin. In fact, the Turin Metro Line 1 will be upgraded with a new digital signalling system, incorporating train-centric CBTC technology and train-to-train communication, replacing the current analog VAL system.
This system will enable, through a significant reduction in trackside equipment, greater efficiency for maintenance operations and increased availability of operating hours.
The CBTC system will allow for complete remote control of the system, safe train movement monitoring through control of traction and braking systems, and automatic management of subway movement with different levels of automation benefiting train frequency that can be as low as less than 70 seconds between trains, while ensuring safe movement.

For this, we have moved on two directives: with the new CBTC system and the expansion of the fleet with the purchase of the new trains, we count on increasing the offer of the current service, with extended timetables thanks to the reduced need for nighttime maintenance work on the line and improving comfort on board the train." says Bernadino Chiaia President and CEO of Infra.To.
