INAUGURATION OF A NEW EXTENSION TO THE CAIRO METRO
On 5 October, the first stage of Line 3 Phase 3 (Phase 3A) of the Greater Cairo Metro in Egypt was inaugurated, marking a major milestone for SYSTRA who have supported the development of this network since the initial studies in 1970.
SYSTRA has worked on Line 3 as part of a Consulting Engineer Joint Venture (CEJV) with engineering firms, Egis, ACE and EHAF since 2017, providing Technical and Project Management support for our client the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT). SYSTRA was the Project Manager for the previous phases of Line 3 where Phase 1 was opened in February 2012 followed by Phase 2 in May 2014 and Phase 4A in June 2019.
In 2021, NAT received the top prize in the Rail/Transit category at the annual Global Best Projects competition event organised by the American magazine Engineering News-Record (ENR) for Phase 4B of Line 3 which was opened in August 2020, and for which SYSTRA was project manager from 2015-2021.
We are pleased and proud to be able to contribute to this achievement by putting into service the first stage of Cairo Metro Line 3 Phase 3 which cements our position as the Signature Team and the consultant of choice for the NAT. We are honoured to have expanded our trustful partnership with NAT for almost 50 years now and to be part of this success story Cairo Metro Line 3, a safe and sustainable means of transport which will ease the daily life of citizens and visitors.
The Cairo Metro is improving the quality of transport in the city by creating safer, and more efficient mobility services for the population. It should also ease traffic congestion on the roads, reduce pollution and contribute to the regeneration of some of the city’s lower income residential areas.
