KEEPING RAILCARS MOVING: DIGITALIZATION OF MAINTENANCE WORKSHOPS MOVING AHEAD AT FULL SPEED

More than 75% of all workshop revisions on GATX railcars are already handled digitally. This marks an important milestone in the two-year roll-out plan by GATX Rail Europe, which started in March 2020. The plan targets all 46 maintenance shops in the GATX Rail Europe partner network to be operating with the digital workshop portal by the end of 2022.

KEEPING RAILCARS MOVING: DIGITALIZATION OF MAINTENANCE WORKSHOPS MOVING AHEAD AT FULL SPEED

“We’re glad to report that we are on track with our maintenance workshop digitalization project. We’ve managed to introduce the digital handling of revisions in many of our larger partner workshops and now have all smaller workshops in our pipeline,” says Hubert Gołębiewski, IT Manager Digitalization & Innovation at GATX Rail Europe. He added, “This initiative has been a real success!”

So far, 2,700 railcar repairs have been handled digitally as well as over one million railcar measurements collected and confirmed and 160,000 validations triggered and executed. This shows how widely the platform has already been accepted in just a few months of go-live. Martin Artner from RailMaint confirms, “The digital maintenance workshop platform of GATX is the best digital workshop solution I’ve worked with so far. The usability is great, and it really cuts down the time spent on administration.” All our partner workshops confirmed an increased productivity thanks to the introduction of GATX Rail Europe’s digital platform.

Digital maintenance workshop platform goes mobile
This portal was originally intended for workshops only, but to keep improving our digital customer service and experience, a mobile app for the digital inspection before and after handovers is now available to all GATX staff. It allows for advanced supervision modules to inspect wagons at any point of time, whenever and wherever needed.

The mobile app has been in use across the entire organization since June 1, 2021, and at the end of September, more than 420 railcar inspections have been carried out using the mobile app. “The app makes our customer-facing teams faster and more efficient. Time is freed up so we can spend it on solving our customers’ transport problems and making railcar leasing easier for them,” says Götz Nink, Chief Technical Officer at GATX Rail Europe.
