GATX Unveils Sustainable Railcars

Railways keep Europe moving—but what keeps railway infrastructure in top shape? The answer: maintenance projects and new rail lines connecting cities across the continent. Both rely on railway sleepers, which need to be transported efficiently to their final track beds.

With infrastructure projects on the rise, we’re introducing the Slnps, our latest railcar type, designed to support railway construction and maintenance across Europe.

Engineered for Efficiency
Designed for the seamless transportation of railway sleepers, the Slnps is a modern 4-axle flatcar featuring foldable center stanchions for maximum loading flexibility.
Thanks to the adjustable height of the rails (ToR: between 1,375 mm and 1,470 mm), this railcar is flexible for different portal crane solutions and allows for smooth sleeper transportation by the portal crane, making it an optimal choice for infrastructure expansion and renewal.

The four foldable central stanchions allow for full-length loading capacity, making it adaptable for various transport configurations.

Technical Highlights

Here are the technical highlights of our new Slnps railcars:

  • Tare weight: approx. 26.0 t
  • Loading weight: approx. 64.0 t
  • Length over buffers: 20,640 mm
  • Optimized loading system: Up to 180 sleepers in 3 layers or 168 sleepers in 4 layers
  • Crane rail profile: S33
  • Stanchions: Front welded, middle foldable
Driving Sustainability in Rail Infrastructure
Rail freight is one of the most sustainable transport modes, and as rail maintenance and expansion accelerates across the European Union and the Nordics, GATX Rail Europe’s Slnps offers an optimized, eco-friendly way to transport sleepers—ensuring the smooth delivery of essential materials to build and maintain Europe’s railway network.
