Hitachi Rail awarded Supporting Systems Contract of DSB's "Future of S-Bane" Programme

DSB (Danish State Railways) has awarded Hitachi Rail the SuSy project, a key component of its ambitious "Future of S-Bane" Programme, which will transform Copenhagen's S-Bane into a fully automated railway network.
The project represents an important milestone in one of Denmark's most significant railway modernization initiatives and will help create the foundations for the next generation of urban rail transport. The award reinforces Hitachi Rail's long-standing presence in Denmark and further strengthens the company's role in delivering innovative solutions for one of the most ambitious railway automation programmes in Europe.
SuSy, which stands for Support Systems, encompasses the design, delivery and maintenance of a range of systems intended to support network operations, while enhancing passenger interaction and the overall travel experience across the 87 stations of the S-Bane network.
As part of the "Future of S-Bane" Programme, these systems will play a fundamental role in enabling future automated operations. By integrating operational support, infrastructure monitoring and passenger-facing technologies, SuSy will provide a key digital and operational foundation for Copenhagen's future railway.
The Future of S-Bane Programme represents one of the largest railway modernisation initiatives introducing a new generation of automated operations across Copenhagen's suburban railway network.
The scope of the contract includes an IT Network, SCADA, a new passenger announcement & information system, an advanced CCTV solution, platform emergency stop buttons, Maintenance Management System, HMAX (AI-driven suite of digital asset management solutions) and, most significantly, the ODS-P (Obstacle Detection System - Platform). Together, these systems will provide operators with enhanced visibility and decision-support capabilities while improving communication and information services for passengers throughout the network.
A key element of the project is ODS-P (Obstacle Detection System – Platform), an advanced monitoring solution designed to detect people, animals or large objects that enter the track area within station environments. The system supports the management of approaching trains by providing critical information to operational systems, helping reduce operational risks and minimise unnecessary service disruptions.
By supporting the passenger protection and obstacle detection requirements associated with unattended train operation, the ODS-P system becomes a critical enabler of the wider network automation programme while strengthening railway expertise and innovation in Denmark and creating valuable experience for future automated railway projects internationally.
The overall solution leverages on Hitachi rail broad portfolio of railway technologies, combining operational systems, digital asset management, intelligent monitoring and artificial intelligence applications to support DSB's vision for the future railway. Beyond addressing DSB's operational requirements, the project also demonstrates how integrated digital technologies can support the efficient deployment of automated railways. The experience and expertise developed through SuSy will contribute to the advancement of automated railway solutions across the rail industry.
