Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has enabled the start of passenger service for Sydney Metro Southwest line in Sydney, Australia, with the provision of trains, maintenance and signalling solutions. The opening of passenger service completes and connects the M1 North West, City and Southwest lines, creating a continuous 66-kilometre metro railway with 31 stations across the city’s northwest, central business district and southwest geographies.
1.Communications Based Train Control
The opening of the Southwest line brings high frequency metro services to Sydney’s southwest for the first time. It connects communities along a transformed 130-year-old railway with faster journeys and direct cross-city services, while preserving the heritage and character of ten upgraded stations. Alstom has installed a CBTC solution on this line - the second of such equipment on a brownfield line in Australia’s history, after the deployment of Alstom’s CBTC solution in Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel last year.
Global technology supporting a long-term transport vision
Alstom has been at the heart of Sydney Metro’s network expansion projects throughout the last 14 years, bringing the full scope of its rolling stock, maintenance, digital and integrated systems expertise.
Guillaume Tritter, Managing Director, Alstom Australia and New Zealand said, "the journey to Sydney Metro Southwest passenger service has been built on deep partnership, trust and the commitment of people across Alstom and our partners across Sydney Metro, Metro Trains Sydney, NRT Corporation and MTR.”
“The opening of Sydney Metro Southwest, powered by our global technology, expertise and local knowhow, is an historic moment in Sydney’s passenger transport history. We take great pride in the contribution of our teams to this moment and the positive impact on people, communities and industry that the opening of Sydney Metro Southwest will have for years to come.”
Following the opening of Sydney Metro Northwest Line in May 2019, Alstom was awarded in same year the contract to supply 23 additional six-car Metropolis trains and Urbalis signalling technology for the City & Southwest extensions. The scope included project management, design, manufacturing, testing and commissioning.
Alstom also maintains the entire metro fleet from Metro Trains Sydney’s Tallawong depot where the fleet enjoys a near perfect record of reliability and availability.
