CAF Expands Nordic Rail Maintenance Portfolio
The contracts cover passenger rolling stock, freight locomotives, and infrastructure maintenance vehicles across Sweden and Norway through long-term service agreements.

Rail operators in the Nordic region are increasingly relying on long-term maintenance contracts to improve fleet availability, control lifecycle costs, and support reliable public transport and freight operations. In this context, CAF’s Nordic rail maintenance subsidiary EuroMaint secured new maintenance agreements in Sweden and Norway with a combined estimated value of EUR 300 million.
The contracts span regional passenger rail, freight locomotive servicing, and railway infrastructure maintenance, expanding EuroMaint’s long-term rail services backlog across the Nordic mobility market.
Passenger fleet maintenance in southern Sweden
One of the largest agreements is tied to the operation of Pågatågen regional rail services in Sweden’s Skåne region. Public transport authority Skånetrafiken awarded operator VR Sverige the contract to operate and maintain the service from December 2027, with EuroMaint responsible for maintaining the X61 regional fleet of 99 trainsets for nine years.
The maintenance scope centers on long-term fleet planning, system reliability, and availability management as the rolling stock ages in service. Most maintenance work will be carried out at EuroMaint’s Raus depot in Helsingborg, strengthening its operational footprint in southern Sweden.
For passenger rail operators, structured lifecycle maintenance programs are critical to maintaining timetable reliability while extending fleet service life and managing overhaul costs.
Freight locomotive support across Sweden
In the freight segment, Green Cargo renewed its multi-year agreement with EuroMaint for maintenance of its Rc/Rd locomotive fleet, one of Sweden’s larger freight locomotive fleets.
The contract includes both maintenance services and supply of critical components. EuroMaint will support the fleet through its maintenance depot network spanning from Lulea to Malmo, enabling nationwide servicing coverage.
The agreement is intended to improve locomotive availability, operational flexibility, and lifecycle cost optimization, all relevant factors in rail freight operations where equipment downtime directly affects network capacity and delivery performance.
Infrastructure vehicle maintenance in Norway
EuroMaint also secured a separate contract in Norway with Bane NOR, the national railway infrastructure manager, for maintenance of rail vehicles used in infrastructure works.
The agreement has a minimum duration of four years and covers vehicles used to support railway maintenance and infrastructure operations. These assets are central to track access, inspection, repair, and network resilience.
Maintenance of infrastructure fleets requires different service priorities than passenger rolling stock, with emphasis on equipment reliability, operational readiness, and safety-critical performance.
Wider Nordic rail services strategy
The contracts align with CAF’s broader activity in the Scandinavian rail market, where the company has delivered rolling stock for the Oslo airport rail connection, the Helsinki metro, and tram systems in Stockholm, Oslo, and Lund.
CAF is also executing contracts for regional train fleets for Transitio AB and SJ AB, alongside a Helsinki Metro signaling upgrade using CBTC technology.
