From the end of 2028, Appenzell Railways will deploy two new 21-metre-long adhesion and rack-and-pinion multiple units on the Rorschach–Heiden line, replacing a regular vehicle built in 1998 as well as two significantly older reserve vehicles.

Fleet renewal with operational benefits
By procuring two identical multiple units, Appenzell Railways gain several operational advantages. During periods of high passenger demand, the vehicles can be operated coupled together (double traction), providing additional capacity with a flexible concept. Thanks to the lower vehicle weight and the use of the latest technologies, energy consumption and maintenance costs can be reduced.

A unique travel experience
The new Stadler vehicles meet all requirements of Switzerland’s Disability Discrimination Act (BehiG). They feature step-free low-floor access, spacious areas for bicycles and strollers, two wheelchair spaces, air conditioning, infotainment systems and power sockets.

Another innovation is the reintroduction of first class on the Rorschach–Heiden line. Positioned at the front and rear of the train, it offers particularly attractive views of the route and Lake Constance. A further special feature is that first class is combined with the driver’s cab. Passengers therefore sit directly next to the driver and can experience train operation at close range, creating a distinctive travel experience.

The popular summer service with open panoramic coaches will also continue to be offered with the new multiple units. With this procurement, Appenzell Railways mark an important milestone for future operating models. The vehicles are already prepared for later automated operation at GoA4 level. The introduction of fully automated operation is currently planned for around 2035.

End of service life reached
The two existing reserve vehicles dating from 1953 and 1967 have reached the end of their technical service life. Their operating approval from the Federal Office of Transport expires at the end of 2028. Retrofitting these reserve vehicles is technically not possible, and upgrading the current regular vehicle from 1998 would involve disproportionate costs. In addition, the existing vehicles do not meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Against this background, Appenzell Railways, together with the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden and the federal government, decided to procure new vehicles. The investment volume amounts to CHF 17.5 million.

Context
The fleet renewal coincides with a special year for the Rorschach–Heiden railway line, which was opened in 1875 and is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. With the new multiple units, Appenzell Railways combine the replacement of aging rolling stock with a qualitative enhancement of services, while also creating the basis for a sustainable and technologically future-proof railway operation.
