Railway Industrial Manufacturing Expansion in Morocco

Alstom has announced a 100 million dirham industrial investment in Morocco to expand production capacity and engineering capabilities, including the establishment of a dedicated production line for train driver desks serving multiple railway platforms.

Establishing a multi-platform production capability
Central to the investment is the launch of what Alstom describes as the world’s first dedicated, multi-platform production line for train driver desks. Unlike platform-specific manufacturing, this line is designed to supply standardized driver desk assemblies compatible with different train architectures, enabling production for multiple international rail projects from a single site.

The driver desks manufactured in Morocco will be integrated into railway projects globally, positioning the country as a production hub for a critical human–machine interface component within modern train systems.

Expanding electrical equipment production
Beyond the driver desk line, the industrial plan includes doubling transformer production capacity. Transformers are a key component in traction and onboard power systems, and increasing output supports both higher production volumes and a broader range of rolling stock programs.

This capacity expansion is intended to reinforce Morocco’s role in supplying electrical subsystems within Alstom’s global manufacturing network.

Strengthening local engineering capabilities
The investment also includes the creation of a local development and engineering office. This facility is expected to support product adaptation, industrialization, and engineering activities linked to manufacturing operations in Morocco.

By combining production with local engineering resources, Alstom aims to shorten development cycles and increase technical autonomy within the Africa, Middle East, and Central Asia (AMECA) region.

Employment and industrial ecosystem impact
The expansion is expected to create more than 200 direct jobs, contributing to the growth of Morocco’s railway industrial ecosystem. The project builds on existing manufacturing activities and supports the development of specialized skills in electrical systems, mechanical integration, and industrial engineering.

Such workforce expansion aligns with broader efforts to anchor higher-value manufacturing and engineering activities locally rather than limiting operations to assembly-focused roles.

Position within the global railway value chain
By consolidating driver desk production, transformer manufacturing, and engineering functions in Morocco, Alstom is increasing the strategic importance of the country within its global supply and production network. The initiative reflects a shift toward distributed industrial hubs capable of delivering complete subsystems for international rail projects, rather than serving only regional demand.

Within the context of railway manufacturing, this approach supports scalability, standardization across platforms, and closer integration between design and production—factors that are increasingly relevant as rail operators demand faster project execution and consistent system interfaces across fleets.
