Siemens Mobility has secured a contract from Trivia Trens S.A. to deliver and implement a complete, digital signaling system featuring Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over ETCS Level 2 for São Paulo's commuter rail lines 11-Coral, 12-Sapphire, and 13-Jade. The project covers 140 kilometers of track and 46 stations, marking Latin America's largest implementation of this advanced rail signaling technology. The contract includes equipping 107 trains, six locomotives MRS, three locomotives TRIVIA and 17 auxiliary vehicles (yellow fleet) with Trainguard ETCS (European Train Control System) on-board units.

"By implementing ATO over ETCS Level 2 in São Paulo's busy metropolitan transportation network, we're setting new standards for automated urban rail transportation in the region and up to 30% increased network capacity. Together with our client, we implement the largest ETCS Level 2 project in South America."

The comprehensive scope includes the design, supply, installation, commissioning and assisted operation of the signaling system across the three lines, equipping various train types from various manufacturers with state-of-the-art Trainguard ETCS onboard units. The solution encompasses key components such as an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATS), modern interlocking systems, Radio Block Centre (RBC), and complete trackside equipment, backed by a two-year warranty period and spare parts provision.

ATO over ETCS represents the cutting edge of rail technology, combining two advanced systems to maximize operational efficiency and safety. While the ETCS Level 2 provides continuous digital supervision and control of train movements via TETRA, the ATO system automates driving functions to Grade of Automation (GoA) Level 2. This technological integration enables precise acceleration and braking patterns, exact stopping at platforms, and optimized headways between trains.

The implementation of this advanced technology will transform São Paulo's commuter rail line operations through enhanced service frequency and reliability. The system's optimized driving algorithms significantly reduce energy consumption and peak power demand, while its streamlined architecture minimizes maintenance requirements. With fewer trackside components and the ability for future upgrades, this solution represents a future-proof investment for São Paulo's expanding mobility needs.
