Hitachi Rail's 55 Years of Innovation and Sustainable Mobility in Mexico

Hitachi Rail is celebrating 55 years of operations in Mexico, consolidating its position as a strategic partner for efficient, safe and sustainable transport in the country. Backed by Hitachi's global business network, the company offers the Mexican market cutting-edge railway technology developed worldwide.

With a local team of 177 professionals, the company has played a key role in national milestones such as supplying the Operations Control Centres for 11 Mexico City Metro lines (1968–1998), groundbreaking at the time, and commissioning the ETCS Level 1 signalling and control system on the Buenavista–Cuautitlán line in 2008. Soon, Hitachi Rail will deliver, for the first time in the Americas, the ETCS Level 2 system for the Mexico–Toluca Interurban Train, a project that will enhance mobility for more than 600,000 passengers per day.

The company has also built extensive expertise in ticketing and access-control systems, having participated in the Mexico City Light Rail, Metrobús lines 3, 6 and 7, and the ticketing system for the Mexico–Toluca Interurban Train. Its Technology Competence Centre, staffed by software specialists in the capital, has designed the PITZ® tolling solution, exporting Mexican talent and technology to motorway projects across Latin America. This cutting-edge team has designed and developed technology for motorway toll systems using local talent, contributing to the design, development, implementation, commissioning and maintenance of various projects throughout Mexico and Latin America.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Hitachi Rail will participate in Expo Rail 2025, the transport congress taking place on 2 and 3 October in Santa Fe, where it will present its latest innovations in digital signalling, railway telecommunications and operations management.

The Hitachi group operates in Mexico through five legal entities with unique capabilities in automotive systems and equipment, information technologies, and energy and transport solutions, driving integrated, clean and next-generation mobility.

Key Contribution to the Mexico–Toluca Interurban Line

Hitachi Rail has delivered the advanced digital signalling European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 1, and will soon deliver Level 2, on the railway line connecting the State of Mexico between Toluca and Mexico City. This will enable capacity to increase to 600,000 passengers per day. The implementation of the ERTMS Level 2 solution will mark a technological milestone, as it will be the first time it is put into service on the American continent.

The arrival at Observatorio station will mark ten years of Hitachi Rail's work on this ambitious railway connecting the State of Mexico's Toluca metropolitan area with Mexico City. Known as El Insurgente, the line covers a total of 58 kilometres, 49 of which are already in operation and have used an ERTMS Level 1 system installed by Hitachi Rail in 2024.

ERTMS is the most advanced system for digital control of railway tracks, allowing more trains to use the lines simultaneously while improving speed and reliability.

Hitachi Rail is also responsible for the installation and commissioning of the telecommunications systems on the El Insurgente line, including fibre-optic data transmission, multiservice network, broadband radio, GSM-R, closed-circuit television, telephony, intercoms, public-address systems, voice recording, access control, as well as safety remote-control systems, the User Service Remote Control and the On-Line Services Integrator, among other services.
