CAF Signalling Contract Details for Spain

The contract covers the supply of the safety installations for the Nudo de La Encina-Xátiva-Valencia section of the Mediterranean Corridor.

Spanish rail infrastructure manager ADIF awarded the contract to the Thales-CAF Signalling consortium at the end of July.

The contract covers the construction project design, the performance of the installations, the maintenance of the interlocking facilities, train protection systems, centralised traffic control, auxiliary detection systems, the power supply system, telecommunications and safety and protection facilities. Furthermore, these works are to cover both conventional and high-speed lines. ERTMS Levels 1 and 2 will also be introduced.

The Thales-CAF consortium has 36 months to complete the contract. During the first six months the drafting and approval works will take place. The performance of the works will then take up the remaining 30 months. Another aspect of the contract is the 25-year maintenance period for the high-speed equipment, and a 20-year maintenance period for the conventional network equipment.

CAF Signalling’s share of the contract is worth around 80 million euros (90 million USD).

The Mediterranean Corridor

The Mediterranean Corridor is a central freight and passenger route in Europe. It runs from Spain, through France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and into Hungary. Its total length is more than 6,000km. One of the challenges on this corridor is the existence of two different gauges: Iberian gauge (Spain) and standard gauge.

CAF Signalling Contract Details for Slovenia

In Slovenia CAF Signalling is in a consortium with ISKRA. Here the consortium will address the refurbishment of the signalling and safety systems between the stations of Zidani Most (a Mediterranean Corridor station) and Sentilj on the Austro-Slovenian border.

The works for this section are co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility and the European Regional Development Fund. They include the design, installation, testing and commissioning of the signalling equipment and systems. Over the course of the contract the consortium will replace old ISKRA relay interlocks with CAF Signalling electronic interlocks.

The section of track within the scope of this contract is 117km in length and covers 17 stations. The investment aims to upgrade Slovenia’s main lines with the goal of improving both safety and capacity. Regularity and frequency should also go up while maintenance costs should go down.

CAF Signalling Contract Details for Bulgaria

The National Railways Infrastructure Company of Bulgaria has awarded the consortium made up of AER and CAF Signalling the contract to refurbish and modernise the signalling and telecommunications systems between Sofia and Voluyak. The works also cover Sofia Central Station, the country’s main station and transport hub.

The Connecting Europe Facility is co-funding this contract too. The works include the design, installation, testing and commissioning of all signalling and telecommunications systems (ETCS Level 1, GSM-R). The consortium will also fit new CAF Signalling electronic interlocks on 12km of track.
