Egis awarded the general management of the half-underground express tram project in France's 3rd largest city

This new line connecting the west and center of the Lyon metropolis, will extend the tram line T2 by around 6 km, 50% of which will be underground. Set to be operational by 2032, TEOL will combine the benefits of both surface and underground dedicated-lane public transport, thus providing an efficient and comfortable service. Egis is leading a consortium that includes the landscape architects Gautier-Conquet and the architectural firms Atelier Schall and Grimshaw.
The project
The TEOL project, which expects 50,000 to 55,000 passengers a day, aims to link the west of the metropolis to its central district via the south of the Presqu'île district. The numerous connections available at the Perrache and Jean Macé stations (metro lines A and B, rail services, tramway T2, see map below) will promote intermodality, enabling efficient service throughout the metropolitan area.
The project involves creating a new tramway infrastructure between the Confluence area (Lyon 2nd district) and the Alaï area (Francheville and Tassin-la-Demi-Lune), with a service frequency of 5 minutes during peak hours.
The line will combine the performance of underground dedicated-lane public transport, with an approximately 3 km tunnel section and 2 underground stations (Point du Jour and Charcot-Provinces), with the fine service of a surface tram, with 3 new stations (Ménival, Libération and Alaï).
The project also includes a complete redevelopment of the public spaces it traverses, thus improving the living environment and routes for active transport (bicycles, pedestrians). The project also includes the creation of a multimodal interchange at Alaï, including bike and car park-and-ride facilities, with 300 spaces each.
The project also stands out for its high level of technical expertise:
. The tunnel features an 8% gradient and has to be built in the complex geotechnical and hydrogeological context of the Balmes slope, with particularly limited construction site areas,
. The construction of a ventilation and emergency access shaft at a depth of more than 70 metres,
. The construction of a new bridge over the Saône river, also incorporating active mode pathways,
. The connection to the existing tramway network and the optimisation of the current operation of Line T2,
. The urban context and significant environmental challenges of the traversed areas

Egis’ mission
Egis is the leader of the consortium formed with Gautier+Conquet (landscape architect for surface developments), Atelier Schall (architect for the Point du Jour station) and Grimshaw (architect for the Charcot-Provinces station).
As the general project manager, Egis will be responsible for all the design and construction phases, from preliminary design to commissioning, as well as the following additional tasks:
. Site scheduling, management and coordination (OPC),
. Synthesis and coordination of network diversions,
. Structural reinforcement,
. Assistance in drafting administrative documents,
. Preparation of safety files,
. Assistance in archaeological monitoring,
. Pre-operational testing
The scope covers :
. All infrastructures, excluding the bridge over the Saône river:
. The tunnel and associated structures
. The two new underground stations (Point du Jour and Charcot - Provinces)
. All surface developments
. Project management of sewerage networks
. All equipment and systems (excluding rolling stock and central systems): railway tracks, overhead contact lines (LAC), high voltage, low voltage, ventilation, electromechanics, signaling, etc,,
. Modifications and adaptations to the T2 line.
On this unique project, Egis will leverage and orchestrate its multidisciplinary expertise, including geotechnics and civil engineering of underground structures, tramway system design, design of underground station public buildings, environmental engineering, structural engineering, and road and utilities. This approach demonstrates a comprehensive vision for the design and supervision of transport infrastructure projects, as well as the capability to manage large-scale projects.
