Italferr advances Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway with tunnel breakthroughs in Uttarakhand
The 125 km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway, with 105 km of tunnels, advances with major excavation milestones, enhancing connectivity in Uttarakhand’s challenging terrain.

On Package 1, on March 7, 2025, the section of the Escape Tunnel from the Adit (intermediate tunnel serving the excavation) to Portal P2 was completed. Excavation work began in May 2021.
Activities are progressing at full speed with the simultaneous breakthrough in the tunnels of Packages-1 and 8. A total of 125 km of new railway connection, predominantly underground (105 km developed over 17 tunnels), running parallel to the Ganges riverbed, penetrating the Himalayan mountain system.
With its 13 stations, the ambitious project of the new railway line in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, executed for RVNL, Rail Vikas Nigam (Indian Railways), sees Italferr, the engineering company of the FS Group, in Joint Venture with the Swiss company Lombardi, tackling complex Design and Project Management Consulting (PMC) activities in a particularly challenging environmental context.

On Package 8, on March 3, 2025, the entire excavation of the Main Tunnel was completed, with a total length of over 7 km and an excavation diameter of almost 9 m. Excavation work began in 2022.
The whole construction is divided into ten packages, and Packages 1 and 8 have been assigned to the JV led by Italferr. Specifically, Package 1 includes 12 km of line, comprising a tunnel of about 11 km and a station at Shivpuri, while Package 8 includes two tunnels, respectively 6.6 km and 7.1 km, entirely built using traditional excavation methods, and two stations at Golthir and Gauchar.
The milestones achieved in March 2025 on both Packages mark a significant advancement in the excavation process, which will be completed in 2026.

A project that is not just a transportation initiative, but a confirmation of Italferr's commitment to innovation and resilience in one of the most challenging geographical and environmental contexts on the planet, paving the way for a crucial railway connection that will improve mobility and connectivity in this beautiful region.
