CargoBeamer, a leading provider in the rail transportation of semi-trailers, is set to expand its European network with a new connection between Kornwestheim near Stuttgart, Germany, and Domodossola, Italy. Starting February 11, the new line will operate three weekly roundtrips, with trains departing Kornwestheim on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and return services leaving Domodossola on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
This new service underlines CargoBeamer's commitment to shifting freight from road to rail, offering a more environmentally friendly solution for long-distance logistics. The Stuttgart–Domodossola line complements the company’s existing Kaldenkirchen–Domodossola route, which has already facilitated the transportation of thousands of semi-trailers over the Alps each month. By enabling trailer transport without tractors or drivers, CargoBeamer allows logistics providers to optimize resource allocation while significantly reducing their carbon footprint.
Achieving 80% CO2 Reduction
The new service adopts an open train concept, making space available for freight forwarders and shippers using all types of semi-trailers, including cranable and non-cranable units, containers, swap-bodies, and refrigerated or tank trailers. This flexibility enables customers to integrate rail transport seamlessly into their existing logistics operations without additional investment. Each unit transported between Stuttgart and Domodossola reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 80% compared to road transport by diesel trucks. Operationally, CargoBeamer partners with SBB Cargo International as the traction provider. The DUSS terminal in Kornwestheim will handle operations on the German side, while the CargoBeamer-Terminal in Domodossola will manage the Italian end of the route.
“This new connection between Stuttgart and Domodossola reinforces CargoBeamer’s position as a key provider of sustainable and efficient combined transport solutions across the Alps,” said Boris Timm, Chief Operating Officer at CargoBeamer. “By integrating the economically vibrant Stuttgart/Kornwestheim region into our network, we are providing an essential link for businesses to leverage the benefits of rail between Germany and Italy. At the same time, this route supports the development of our Domodossola terminal into one of Europe’s most advanced facilities for semi-trailer handling.”
