Tampere orders more trams and extensions from Škoda Group

Škoda Group and Tampereen Raitiotie Oy have signed a €70 million contract for the delivery of seven new trams and eight additional modules to extend the city's existing tram fleet, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

“Tampere is setting an example for cities worldwide by investing in sustainable and efficient public transport solutions. We’re proud to deepen our partnership with Tampereen Raitiotie Oy, building on the success of the trams already in service. We are committed to supporting their vision with innovative solutions that enhance capacity and maintain compatibility with the existing fleet. This partnership reflects how smart design and collaboration can meet the needs of growing cities,” said Jan Harder, President Region West and North at Škoda Group.

“Ordering longer trams is sensible from the perspective of operational efficiency and passenger service. Longer trams have over 30 percent more passenger capacity than shorter ones, as they can accommodate up to 345 people instead of 264. Thanks to the increased passenger capacity, the tram can operate on the entire network with an optimal 7.5-minute interval,” explains Pekka Sirviö, CEO of Tampere Tramway Ltd.

Škoda Group’s trams have already become a familiar and trusted part of Tampere’s streetscape. This order builds upon Tampere’s initial 2017 contract with Škoda Group, which included options for up to 46 trams. With this latest commitment, Tampereen Raitiotie Oy will receive seven more bi-directional trams, complementing the 28 trams previously ordered. These 37-metre vehicles boast a 100% low-floor design, pivoting bogies for smoother rides, and corrosion-resistant construction to endure Finland’s demanding climate.

To address increasing passenger demand, Tampereen Raitiotie Oy has also ordered eight additional modules to extend the length of its existing trams from 37 to 47 metres. Following an initial extension order placed in September, this brings the total number of extended trams to 19 by mid-2028. These longer vehicles will boost passenger capacity by over 30%, ensuring the system can keep pace with growing ridership while maintaining full compatibility with the existing fleet.
