Hitachi Rail to deploy communication, supervision and cybersecurity systems for first passenger services in the UAE

Hitachi Rail to deliver fully integrated telecom solutions for UAE's first passenger rail service.

Hitachi Rail has been awarded the role of master systems integrator for Etihad Rail's, the developer and operator of the UAE National Railway Network, future Passenger Stations. The project marks the UAE's first-ever passenger rail service, which will connect 11 cities and region across the UAE and forms an integral part of the planned Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) railway network.

As part of the contract, Hitachi Rail will install advanced telecommunication systems including communication, supervision, and cybersecurity solutions across the passenger stations, which will be seamlessly integrated into existing control centres used for freight operations. The project will showcase Hitachi Rail's expertise in managing complex brownfield projects.

The goal of this project is to optimize station management, improve passenger safety, and most importantly, facilitate seamless travel between UAE emirates and major cities. This will reduce commute times compared to other transportation modes. This will allow Etihad Rail to actively contribute to the UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the UAE road transport sector by 21% per year.

Once the passenger train is operational, Etihad Rail is expected to transport up to 36.5 million passengers per year by 2030. Hitachi Rail is committed to enhancing the passenger experience to the highest industry standards. Its integrated communication and supervision digital platform, utilizing AI technology, will equip the rail network with the latest innovations and creative technology.

Since the inception of the rail industry in the UAE, Hitachi Rail has played a key role in both urban and mainline railway development. A technology MoU has also been signed with Etihad Rail to collaboratively develop innovative digital solutions.

Benoît Couture, Vice-President of Integrated Communication and Supervision Solutions (ICS) at Hitachi Rail GTS, said: "Our digital expertise will enable us to integrate all key telecom and supervision technologies into one existing platform for the Etihad Rail Passenger Stations project, a transformative initiative for the UAE. Our advanced telecom systems will enhance safety and efficiency, helping to connect all Emirates and supporting sustainable transport goals."

Lotfi Amar, Managing Director UAE at Hitachi Rail, said: "Hitachi Rail is fully committed to delivering the Etihad Rail Passenger Stations project in alignment with the vision of Etihad Rail. We aim to build a strong partnership that fosters trust and collaboration, ensuring we become the go-to choice for future developments in the region."

Nicolas Petrovic, CEO of Etihad Rail Mobility, said:"This partnership with Hitachi Rail marks a significant milestone in our journey to revolutionize passenger transport in the UAE. By integrating cutting-edge communication and cybersecurity systems, we are not only enhancing the travel experience but also aligning with our commitment to sustainability. This project is a testament to our dedication to the UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative, as we work towards reducing CO2 emissions and connecting communities across the Emirates."

In addition to the telecommunications contract, Hitachi Rail will also deliver its advanced Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solution for the 900 km Etihad Rail network. The integrated digital solution will provide a single platform for passengers to access Etihad Rail services, from booking tickets to managing their entire journeys and payment.
