Knorr-Bremse will further expand its presence in South Korea’s mobility market thanks to a major supply agreement with leading train manufacturer Dawonsys.

Knorr-Bremse to equip more Dawonsys regional and commuter trains with electropneumatic braking systems and bolster presence in regional market

The company will equip a large fleet of regional and commuter trains – 208 railcars in total – with complete braking systems. South Korea’s national rail operator KORAIL expects to put the first trains into service at the end of Q1 2024.

Dr. Jürgen Wilder, Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG and responsible for the Rail Vehicle Systems division, says: “With this supply contract, our longstanding partner Dawonsys has reaffirmed its confidence in the highly reliable braking technologies we’ve developed. As a result, we expect to benefit from the dynamic evolution of South Korea’s rail sector, a highly promising mobility market, while at the same time bolstering our position as a key supplier of train systems in the region.”

Knorr-Bremse received the order to equip 208 railcars at the end of 2022, after Dawonsys exercised the relevant option on a supply contract that had been in place since 2020. As well as components for providing an efficient compressed-air supply, the electropneumatic braking systems include tried-and-tested brake control systems, plus industry-leading wheel slide protection technologies for even more precise and consistently reliable braking. Knorr-Bremse’s technologies are making a key contribution to safer, faster and more efficient travel in South Korea’s urban centers.

The original order to equip 150 railcars was Knorr-Bremse’s first opportunity to supply complete braking systems to South Korea’s important regional and commuter train segment. The new order for another 208 railcars means that the company can further expand its presence in this market. Among other things, Knorr-Bremse’s investment in local testing and development facilities, customer-specific design of key components, and success in obtaining system certification, all turned out to be key factors in winning the initial order.
