CREC Tunneling Shields Contribute to Global Underground Construction Projects

A dual-mode tunneling shield measuring 9.98 meters in diameter and around 146 meters in length was debugged in the national TBM industrialization center of the China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG) on January 22. The equipment will be disassembled and transported to a railway tunneling project in Cefalu, Sicily of Italy.

In the Italian railway tunneling project, equipment has to get through sandy gravel, clay soil, clay limestone, sandstone fracture zone and other complicated stratums. There are also historical sites along the railway. These pose extremely high requirements to tunneling equipment. CREG tailor made a dual-mode tunneling shield for the project. The tunneling shield is capable of automatically switching modes in operation, and a master drive telescopic partition board was innovatively devised, effectively improved the adaptability and efficiency of the equipment.

The earth pressure balance shield machine developed by CREG advanced 10 kilometers in a Musaimeer Surface and Groundwater Drainage Tunnel project in Doha, Qatar, breaking a world record. CREG also produced a tunnel boring machine with the largest diameter in the world. The machine was used in an expressway tunnel project in Georgia and solved construction difficulties including long range, large embedded depth and hard rocks.

So far, shield machines produced by CREG have been available on the market in 23 countries and regions including Singapore, Malaysia, Italy, France, Poland and Australia, making contributions to underground development across the world.
