The World's First Long-span Railway Suspension Bridge Closed

Designed by China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group and constructed by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, the Jinshajiang Bridge of the Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway closed successfully on October 13, marking the completion of the world’s first long-span railway suspension bridge.

The World's First Long-span Railway Suspension Bridge Closed
With a total length of 140 kilometers, the Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway is located in northwestern Yunnan Province, and its designed speed is 120 km/h. The Jinshajiang Bridge is situated in Hutiaoxia Scenic Area and is a control project for the entire Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway. The bridge is 882.5 meters long and the main span is 660 meters. The vertical distance between the bridge deck and the river surface is about 250 meters, equivalent to the height of a building with over 80 floors. The location of the bridge is a near-field earthquake zone with high intensity, and ten-magnitude winds are quite common in the Hutiaoxia canyon.

The closing of the bridge is a breakthrough where a railway suspension bridge is successfully built in a complex and dangerous mountainous region. It provides precious experience for people to build similar structures in hazardous natural conditions and offers latitude for engineers to select and design railway routes in the future.
