Work gets under way to replace track on Nottingham’s tram network

VolkerRail has been appointed to complete essential track work in Nottingham city centre.

Work gets under way to replace track on Nottingham’s tram network

From Saturday 20 June until Sunday 19 July, VolkerRail’s metro and rail projects division will remove and replace worn-out sections of track (500m of plain track and a crossover) between Nottingham Express Transit’s (NET) Royal Centre and Old Market Square tram stop.

Preparatory works began on Saturday May 30, taking place overnight and with no effect on tram services.

Mike Mabey, Keolis Nottingham’s head of operations, said: “We’ve been operating for 16 years, and it has now become necessary to replace some of the older sections of track in the city centre so we can continue to operate a safe and reliable network, providing a comfortable journey for our customers.

“This work will take a little longer than originally planned, so VolkerRail can stick to social distancing guidance, but the timing should mean it will disrupt fewer people given much lower numbers of passengers, traffic and city visitors than normal. Work will be completed as quickly as possible and noise prevention measures will be in place throughout the works, but we apologise for the inconvenience and any disruption it may cause.”

John Pearson, VolkerRail’s general manager said: “As a leader in tram maintenance, our teams are well prepared to ensure the replacement of worn out tram across the network will be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
