Sydney to Get 23 Additional Alstom Metropolis Trains

As part of efforts to expand the Sydney Metro network beyond the Northwest line that opened in May 2019, the NSW Government will order 23 new metro trains as part of the City & Southwest phase. This second stage of the Sydney metro will connect the existing eastern terminal of the Northwest line, Chatswood, with Bankstown, resulting in a 66km line by 2024.

The Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the government of NSW had approved Sydney Metro exercising a pre-agreed extension to the Northwest Rapid Transit Public Private Partnership contract that has been in place since 2014. The initial contract was for the operation of teh Northwest line.

The aim of the contract extension is to deliver a seamless customer experience on the new metro. Northwest Rapid Transit will operate and maintain the full metro line from Rouse Hill (the western end of the Northwest line) to Bankstown. The total route will cover 31 stations over 66km.

The contract includes 1.7 billion AUD for new metro trains and core rail systems. Furthermore, 2 billion AUD are allocated for NRT for the operation and maintenance of the combined Northwest and City & Southwest lines for 15 years, until 2034.

NRT has appointed Metro Trains Sydney to operate the railway. The government of New South Wales will own all the metro infrastructure, which includes the stations, tracks and trains.

The metro trains in operation on the Sydney Metro network are Alstom Metropolis units. Alstom is also the signalling subcontractor.
