At InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, Schaeffler is presenting technical solutions for rail transport. The portfolio includes wheelset bearings, electromechanical actuators, and maintenance systems. The implementation of these components aims to increase operational safety and extend the maintenance intervals of rail vehicles. The developments are aimed at the increased requirements for system availability and industrial automation in passenger and freight transport.
Mechanical optimization of wheelset bearings
Schaeffler is introducing friction-reduced TAROL wheelset bearings that lower energy consumption in railway operations. The technical design of these bearings is based on computer-aided calculation methods such as the Bearinx OptiKit. The validation of the calculation models is carried out through experimental measurements on a friction scale for grease-lubricated wheelset bearings under realistic operating conditions. This process enables an exact quantification of friction losses and a targeted modification of the bearing design to stabilize the mechanical performance of the chassis (bogies).

Integration of linear technology and actuators
The linear technology portfolio for railway applications includes electromechanical drives, ball and roller screws, as well as linear guides. Electromechanical EWELLIX actuators and guide elements are used in door opening systems in passenger transport. The EWELLIX CAHB linear drives also control the rapid raising, lowering, and locking of pantographs. In freight transport, electromechanical actuators replace conventional pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders. They operate automated locking and coupling systems as well as the opening mechanisms for tarpaulins, flaps, and unloading doors. This forms the mechanical basis for complete networking of the drives and integration into the digital infrastructure of modern freight wagons.

Reconditioning of components and maintenance
To reduce material consumption, the company offers a local reconditioning service for wheelset, gearbox, and traction motor bearings, as well as slewing rings. Depending on the degree of reconditioning, this remanufacturing process enables resource savings of up to 95 percent compared to new industrial production. Alongside this, Smart Maintenance Tools are implemented, including self-centering mechanical and hydraulic pullers as well as thermal tools. These devices facilitate the damage-free dismantling of large bearings, couplings, and wheels, which shortens physical maintenance times in workshops and increases the technical availability of rail vehicles in regular operation.
