Integrated Rail Planning for Regional Transport

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) has implemented the integrated IVU.rail software platform, developed by IVU Traffic Technologies AG, for the planning and management of its regional railway operations in the Barcelona area. The project aims to modernize timetable and operational planning processes through a centralized digital infrastructure designed to improve efficiency and coordination across the railway network.

Rail Applications and Operational Management
FGC operates one of Spain’s main regional railway networks, with an electrified infrastructure extending across 189 kilometers and 81 stations in the Barcelona metropolitan area, in addition to the Lleida – La Pobla de Segur line, which includes 87 kilometers and 17 additional stations.

The network complements the Barcelona metro system and requires continuous coordination between timetable planning, vehicle management and workforce allocation to ensure reliable regional rail services.

With the implementation of IVU.rail, FGC replaces its previous IT system with an integrated solution covering multiple stages of railway planning and operations.

Digital Architecture and Integrated Planning
The IVU.rail platform enables management of railway infrastructure processes, timetable design, shift planning, vehicle assignment and operational workforce organization within a single digital environment. FGC uses the solution through a Software as a Service (SaaS) model, with data and applications integrated through the IVU.cloud infrastructure. This model centralizes operational information and enables remote access to applications for planning and operations personnel.

IVU Traffic Technologies is responsible for the technical management of the platform, while FGC maintains continuous access to the systems from different operational locations.

According to Carles Ruiz Novella, President of FGC: “With IVU’s new system, we are improving our planning processes with new and enhanced functionalities, allowing us to better coordinate our processes and organize FGC operations more efficiently.”

Optimization of Railway Processes
The integration of the new platform enables FGC to develop more dynamic and adaptable planning processes, improving coordination between operational areas and supporting future expansion of railway services. The solution also provides tools to optimize workflows related to regional transport, rail asset management and operational planning for high-density passenger networks.

Expansion of IVU.rail in the Spanish Railway Market
FGC becomes the third Spanish railway operator to implement IVU.rail. According to IVU Traffic Technologies, the platform is already used in applications involving high-speed rail, metro systems and regional railway operations.

According to Guillermo Calderón, Iberia Sales Director at IVU Traffic Technologies: “IVU.rail has already demonstrated its value in long-distance high-speed trains and metro operations.”
