Škoda Group has won a tender to supply completely new type of rolling stock for Region Stockholm. The new vehicles will operate on the light rail line Saltsjöbanan, which connects Stockholm with Saltsjöbaden in Nacka and is operated by the Stockholm-based transport company Storstockholms Lokaltrafik. The operator can order up to 31 vehicles, with the base contract covering 16 two-car units and an option for further 15 units. The total contract value, including the option, spare parts, and driver training, exceeds EUR 230 million. Engineers working in Škoda Group's subsidiary in Finland will play a significant role in the development of the vehicles.
"We are developing a completely new type of light rail vehicle that will offer greater comfort, speed, and flexibility, which are the main attributes of modern urban mobility. This is another in a series of strategic projects through which we aim to strengthen our position in the Nordic region and to enter a new market for our rolling stock vehicles. We are delighted that delivering vehicles to Region Stockholm will make daily commuting between the Swedish capital and its surroundings more modern and comfortable for its residents," said Jan Harder, President Region West and North at Škoda Group.
Each vehicle will consist of a two-car unit with a length of 36 meters and a DC power supply of 750/1500 V. All bogies will be powered. The capacity of the two-car unit will be around 250 passengers, including 94 seated. The operator will be able to couple units together to increase capacity during peak hours – up to three units can be coupled. The vehicles will have an environmentally friendly air-conditioning system running on clean propane.
In addition to Czech engineers, engineers from the Finnish subsidiary of Škoda Group — with extensive experience in designing vehicles for demanding Nordic climate conditions — will play a major role in the development. Škoda Group will deliver the first vehicles in 2029, with the start of service planned around late 2029/early 2030.
Škoda Group’s footprint in the Nordics
Škoda Group is firmly established in the Nordic region, with a production site in Otanmäki, Finland, and offices in Helsinki, Oulu, Tampere, and in the Swedish capital as well. The group’s footprint is visible not only in Finland, where Škoda has produced or is producing around 180 trams for Helsinki and Tampere, and more than 300 double-deck passenger coaches for the national railway operator VR — including seating, restaurant, sleeping, and multifunctional coaches. In Sweden, trolleybuses in Landskrona are equipped with Škoda Group’s electric equipment, and in Gothenburg the group is modernizing a fleet of 79 M31 trams.
