Trenitalia and Alstom unveil the new regional train at 200 km/h

Trenitalia (Gruppo FS Italiane) and Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, today have unveiled the new regional train capable of reaching 200 km/h at the opening of EXPO Ferroviaria 2025. This next-generation train for Italy, represents a significant step forward in regional mobility.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Lombardy Region, including Councillors Franco Lucente (Transport and Sustainable Mobility) and Claudia Maria Terzi (Infrastructure and Public Works). Also present Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and General Manager Trenitalia; and Michele Viale, Manging Director Alstom in Italy.

The new regional trains will join Trenitalia’s fleet and operate in Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria. Part of Alstom’s Coradia Stream family, these electric multiple-unit trains feature a low-floor design for easy access and are engineered for high performance and modularity. Operators can customize configurations and interiors to meet specific service needs. With over 800 Coradia Stream trains sold across Europe, this platform is among the most widespread and efficient solutions for regional, interregional, cross-border, and intercity transport.

“The new 200 km/h regional train represents a crucial step in the transformation and renewal of the fleet that Trenitalia and the FS Group are carrying out,” said Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and General Manager of Trenitalia. "This process, which goes hand in hand with the renewal of the high-speed and Intercity fleet, is the result of a total investment of €7 billion, which will enable 80% of the regional fleet to be renewed by 2027. Trenitalia is committed to providing state-of-the-art trains that are not only modern and comfortable, but above all sustainable, capable of connecting territories and communities, promoting more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly mobility.

Manufactured at Alstom’s sites in Savigliano (CN), Sesto San Giovanni (MI), and Bologna, the new train is a testament to Italian engineering and innovation. It offers barrier-free accessibility with automatic boarding ramps, 16 dedicated spaces for bicycles (including e-bikes), and spacious, comfortable interiors. Sustainability is a key focus: over 96% of the materials used are recyclable, and energy-efficient systems allow up to 35% savings in consumption. With a maximum speed of 200 km/h, the train ensures faster connections and can carry up to 1,076 passengers, including 618 seated across eight carriages. Onboard amenities include next-generation seating, advanced climate control, and a quiet environment for an enhanced travel experience.

From a technological perspective, the train integrates ERTMS signaling systems and a full Ethernet TCMS with predictive diagnostics, ensuring maximum reliability and reduced maintenance times. Safety is further enhanced by an automatic fire detection system and the use of fire-retardant materials.

The launch of the new regional train is part of a broader plan to modernize Italy’s regional fleet. Trenitalia already operates 931 next-generation trains and plans to introduce a total of 1,061 trains by 2027, with a total investment of €7 billion to renew 80% of the regional fleet. Every day, Regionale di Trenitalia guarantees over 6,000 trips, transporting more than 400 million passengers annually to 1,700 destinations.
