Designing the Future: the main theme of the 12th Edition

At the opening ceremony that kicks off the exhibition, Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini and key industry representatives discuss sector trends and priorities.

Milan, 30 September 2025 – With the participation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Sen. Matteo Salvini, the 12th edition of EXPO Ferroviaria 2025 officially opened today. The biennial international exhibition dedicated to railway technologies, products, and systems is being hosted in Halls 9 and 11 at Fiera Milano Rho until October 2.

The opening ceremony featured institutional greetings from Arianna Censi, Counsillor for Mobility of the Municipality of Milan, Franco Lucente, Councillor for Transport and Sustainable Mobility of the Lombardy Region, and Claudia Maria Terzi, Councillor for Infrastructure and Public Works of the Lombardy Region. The session then continued with contributions from Andrea Severini (CEO, Trenord), Maurizio Bufalini (Director General, TELT), Michele Viale (President, ANIE Assifer), and Gianpiero Strisciuglio (CEO and Director General, Trenitalia), who discussed the prospects of the railway sector at local, national, and international levels. Central to the debate were themes such as digitalization, sustainability, and safety—key drivers for competitive development and the transition toward more environmentally friendly mobility.

Marking the 200th anniversary of the railway, the meeting also provided an opportunity to initiate a shared reflection on medium-term planning, aimed at guiding investments, industrial policies, and innovation initiatives toward a more integrated, resilient, and sustainable railway model.

According to ANIE ASSIFER 2024 data, the Italian railway industry today is worth €7.1 billion in turnover, employs over 22,400 people, and records €1.5 billion in exports. These figures highlight the sector's central role, supported by investments linked to the NRRP (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), and position Italy among the international leaders in the development of advanced technological solutions for rail and electrified transport.

Organized by RX, EXPO Ferroviaria enjoys strong support from the entire industrial sector, which sees the Milan event as a key platform for assessing new technologies and innovations, investments, political demands, and the future of freight and passenger transport. Arianna Rossini, Event Director RX Global, stated: "The 2025 edition confirms the sector's growth and dynamism with an additional exhibition hall, the return of the Outdoor Area, and new zones dedicated to innovation and cross-sector exchange. Highlights include the Aerospace Technology Hub, the Tunneling Area, the Innovation Hub, and EF Connect, the online matchmaking platform that facilitates networking. At RX, we believe the value of trade fairs lies in their ability to generate real relationships and opportunities: EXPO Ferroviaria is a prime example, as it does not merely showcase innovations but creates the space where these innovations become business."
