The line opened in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, carrying about 75,000 users each day. Today the line carries between 140,000 and 152,000 passengers per day, a growth of more than 80%.

In 2014, Alstom was selected by the Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT - Ministry of Communication and Transport) to deliver this project, an integrated system for the expansion of the Guadalajara light rail network. The project is concrete evidence of how Alstom helps to improve mobility services for residents throughout the state of Jalisco, providing significant social and economic benefits.

"Five years after its inauguration, Line 3 continues to be a symbol of our commitment to building sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions for Mexico. This project not only transformed the way people move across Guadalajara, Zapopan and Tlaquepaque, but also demonstrated that modern public transport can be accessible, safe and environmentally responsible, while generating value and opportunities for the communities we serve," said Maite Ramos, general manager of Alstom's northern region of Latin America.

For the Line 3 project, Alstom supplied a comprehensive turnkey solution that included the signalling system, high-voltage substations, traction and traffic control systems—all managed through the Urbalis 400 CBTC (Communications Based Train Control) system. The company also supplied 18 Metropolis trains, made at the Santa Perpetua plant in Barcelona, Spain, equipped with air conditioning, video surveillance, and passenger information systems.

Alstom delivered Line 3 of the Guadalajara Light Rail in September 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, fulfilling the commitment to carry out one of the most important mobility projects in western Mexico. The inauguration of Line 3 provided the city with a safe, efficient and sustainable transport system, at a challenging moment.

Ridership on the line has seen steady growth, climbing from 112 million people in the first three years, coming out of the pandemic, to more than 164 million people by its fourth anniversary, with daily counts reaching over 150,000 per day. The system is designed to carry up to 233,000 passengers per day, and is ready for continued growth.

The line covers more than 21 kilometers with 18 stations, 13 elevated and 5 underground, and connects Zapopan, Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque. It offers free interconnections with Lines 1 and 2 on key avenues, as well as with the Macrobus and the Peribus, favoring multimodality in the city.

Beyond the figures, the social impact is evident: Line 3 has connected dense urban centers of the city, reduced travel times and offered a modern, accessible and sustainable alternative, with infrastructure for people with disabilities and adapted spaces in trains and stations.

This project also created good jobs for Mexicans. Alstom engineers in Mexico designed the signalling system. In total, more than 250 direct jobs were generated throughout the value chain, strengthening Mexico’s railway industry and local expertise.

Five years later, Line 3 has established itself as an axis of functional and efficient mobility that has changed the quality of life of thousands of Jaliscoans.
