Amsterdam public transport company GB Activa has selected CAF as the preferred bidder to supply 30 new metros to the Dutch capital.

The order includes the option to deliver up to 30 additional metros including the optional extension to increase the ordered metros from 3-cars to 6-car vehicles.

The new metros, which are designated M7, each consist of three cars but they can be paired to form six-car vehicles.

“The new metros will strengthen the public transportation system of the city and support the increasing number of passengers on the metro.”

Featuring the latest equipment and passenger information systems, these metros are capable of operating autonomously.

Furthermore, they are reported to be energy efficient and easy to maintain.

In addition to replacing the older fleet, the new vehicles will also boost the capacity of the Amsterdam metro network.

The new metros will strengthen the public transportation system of the city and support the increasing number of passengers on the metro.

Following the opening of the North-South Metroline, the metro system in the city has become one of the key public transportation systems in the country.

In 1994, GVB contracted CAF to deliver 37 metros, which currently operate on the Amsterdam’s metro network.

In 2016, GVB awarded another contract to CAF to supply 63 trams (15G), which are currently being delivered.

In the first four months of this year, CAF signed agreements valuing nearly €350m, including contracts with Metro Barcelona and Vitoria Trams, and for the Naples Metro extension.

One of the main economic and tourist centres in Europe, Amsterdam has a population of more than 800,000.
