DG8 Brings Inspiration to Life with Railway 200 Exhibition Train

This year the UK Rail industry has been celebrating the bicentenary of the modern railway – 200 years since the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in 1825 – through a cross-sector campaign called Railway 200.

On the 26th June, a new the exhibition train, Inspiration, began its year-long tour of the country. During the next twelve months this free, family-friendly train will visit around sixty main-line stations, heritage railways and freight sites, giving more than 200,000 people the chance to step aboard and explore the railway’s past, present and future.

Icomera’s in-house design and engineering team, DG8, supported the project, working alongside Network Rail and the wider Railway 200 team to bring the Inspiration train concept to life. DG8 provided design and installation support as British Rail Mark 3 coaches were converted into the mobile exhibition spaces designed to accommodate, and enthral, the large number of expected visitors.

DG8’s role was to develop the concept design into detailed drawings and documents to support the manufacturing and construction of the train interior for the exhibition.

A Four-Carriage Journey Through Rail’s Past, Present & Future

The exhibition train offers something of interest for all age groups to enjoy, particularly children aged seven to fourteen, encouraging them to think about how their skills and interests might one day fit into the rail industry. Inside the train, visitors are guided through four themed carriages that tell the story of rail in Britain, from its pioneering past to the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The first carriage, named ‘Railway Firsts’, highlights key milestones in the history of the network. The second, ‘Wonderlab on Wheels’, offers hands-on exhibits for children to explore science and engineering in a fun, accessible way. Next, ‘Your Railway Future’ introduces some of the less visible but vital roles in rail, helping visitors picture the wide range of careers that keep the network running. The final carriage, known as the ‘Partner Zone’, provides a flexible space for local groups, suppliers and education partners to share their stories and showcase new ideas.

Mike Mortimer, Director of DG8 said:

"The bicentenary is a great opportunity to look back on all that the railway has achieved for communities across the world, the things that it does well, the areas where we can do better and to look forward and plan for the next 200 years. Inspiration will hopefully do just that and show those that visit the train what fantastic opportunities for learning and development exist within the rail industry and hopefully lead to the next generation coming through into the railway".

Emma Roberts, Programme Manager for Railway 200 said:

"This special exhibition train is a new, free national visitor attraction, offering an unforgettable experience for hundreds of thousands of people across Britain, including many schoolchildren. It will excite, enlighten, entertain and inspire them to take a fresh look at the railway, as part of its anniversary celebrations".
