Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Award 2025 for the design of its new high-speed platform Avelia Stream Nordic X80. The award highlights the train’s design, which combines Nordic functionality with advanced technology and application of strong sustainability principles.
The official ceremony took place on 8 July in Essen, Germany.
Avelia Stream Nordic X80 has been specifically engineered to perform reliably in harsh Scandinavian climates, withstanding temperatures from –40 to +35 °C. It is equipped with energy-efficient systems, including regenerative braking and a low-drag aerodynamic profile. The train accommodates 270 seated passengers and includes multifunctional areas for bicycles, strollers and wheelchairs. Its pressure-tight carbody ensures a quiet and smooth ride even at high speeds and the train has the ability to run through 80 cm of snow.
“Receiving the Red Dot Award is a recognition of our commitment to combining design, technology and sustainability. Avelia Stream Nordic X80 is more than just a train – it is a future-proof solution for reliable and modern public transport in the Nordics,” says Maria Signal Martebo, Managing Director of Alstom Sweden.
In addition to its award-winning exterior, Avelia Stream Nordic X80 is designed with a focus on safety, accessibility and environmental responsibility. The driver’s cab offers excellent visibility and automatic climate control, while the passenger interior blends quiet zones with social spaces, tailored for both work and relaxation.
“We’re facing a historic investment in rail traffic in western Sweden, and our new custom-designed trains are a key part of that journey. Being recognized for their design shows how we’ve successfully combined form, function, and sustainability, all with the passenger in focus,” says Helene Frahm, Head of Design at Västtrafik.
The train features extra-wide doors and easy access for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility and families with strollers. Flexible layouts for seats, bikes and luggage contribute to an inclusive travel experience.
Its lightweight construction and efficient traction system reduce energy consumption, while braking energy is recovered through an electrodynamic system. All materials have been selected to comply with high environmental standards under REACH[1] and rail sector regulations, making the train a safe and responsible choice for both passengers and staff.
Avelia Stream Nordic X80 is designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h and is equipped with the European ERTMS signalling system. The train builds on Alstom’s proven high-speed platform and is specifically adapted to meet the demands of sustainable and accessible rail transport in Northern Europe.
