In the north-west of Romania, at the foot of the Western Carpathians, Cluj-Napoca is a major cultural and university centre with a wealth of Baroque and Gothic architecture. With almost 400,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area, Cluj is counting on the metro to continue its growth.

The country’s first automatic metro line
The Cluj-Napoca metro will be a completely underground line serving the entire city. Once in service, it will be Romania’s second-largest metro system after Bucharest, but above all it will be the country’s first 100% automatic, driverless line. Fast, reliable and sustainable, the Cluj-Napoca metro will help to boost public transport services throughout the region. The metro is scheduled to open at the end of 2031.

A long and successful presence in Romania
SYSTRA has had a branch in Romania since 2006. We have been involved in a number of metro, bridge and tramway projects, and in 2009 we won the contract to manage the extension of line 5 of the Bucharest metro, which was inaugurated in 2021.
