Transfesa Logistics completes the GPS installation throughout the entire fleet of international car carriers

The objective of this digitisation project is to have positioning systems track shipments. Likewise, a decrease in the rotation of the waggons has been achieved, which, in turn, has led to an increase in their availability.

Transfesa Logistics completes the GPS installation throughout the entire fleet of international car carriers

Transfesa Logistics has already equipped its entire fleet of car carriers for international routes with GPS (Global Positioning System) systems, which pinpoints their exact location in real-time. The digitisation process has been carried out in the 889 waggons that operate between Spain and Europe.
According to Fernando Palop, Project Manager of Transfesa Logistics’s Vehicle Distribution Logistics area, “with this solution, Transfesa Logistics has wanted to anticipate the growing market trend that calls for the most advanced solutions and the latest technological developments in rail freight transport”. Likewise, Palop makes a positive assessment of the entire GPS implementation process “we are very satisfied with the results, as they allow us to be at the forefront in terms of digitisation, improve the services provided to our clients and gain efficiency throughout the supply chain’s management”.

A project based on three main pillars
The GPS implementation project throughout the entire car carrier fleet has been based on three main pillars. The first objective is to increase customer satisfaction. The company wants to respond to a real demand requesting that the assets that are going to be used to transport vehicles have this tracking system.
The second objective has been the automation of the entire transport, tracking, and traceability process. With the digitisation of all the operation’s management, both the personnel’s time and the logistics chain’s efficiency has been optimised.
Lastly, the third objective was to reduce waggon rotation. As a result of this automation, and in conjunction with the management software developed by Transfesa Logistics, the ability to move these assets more quickly and efficiently has been increased.

Great challenges overcome
One of the great challenges of the project has been the physical attachment of each GPS device to the corresponding waggon, since the process had to be carried out without stopping its services. Regarding this aspect, Palop points out that it has been possible thanks to a very well structured operation: “Nine installation points have had to be set up between Germany and Spain. Between the workshops that we have throughout Europe and the help of mobile equipment, we have been able to carry out the work without having to take the waggons out of circulation”.

At the forefront of digitisation
With the modernization of this car carrier fleet, the company responds to the objective of being at the forefront in terms of innovation, and has become the first company to have its entire international fleet digitised in Spain.
