Digital services for the future of rail

Turning raw data into actionable intelligence

The technological advances of the 21st century all rely on one thing – data. Successfully delivering better customer outcomes across a range of industries will broadly hinge on how this data is used. This is very evident in the railway sector.

Jean-Philippe graduated from Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France and went on to obtain a Master of Sciences in Management from Emlyon Lyon Business School in 2005. Part of Alstom since 2012, he has been Vice President Services for Signalling for Alstom since 2019. In this role, Jean-Philippe is driving the company’s worldwide services business for railway signalling and infrastructure including the development of digital tools to enhance condition monitoring and asset management.

Today’s rail infrastructure can produce large volumes of data and this offers new opportunities when it is gathered, stored and analysed in order to produce more efficient services for customers and communities.

The extensive use of this data has allowed maintenance to become more precise and predictive. Today, we can identify previously undetected faults, pinpoint failing assets and improve troubleshooting across vast networks of both freight and passenger services.

Together with rail operators and infrastructure managers, Alstom has faced the challenge to optimise networks, boost the effectiveness of maintenance and improve the availability and efficiency of entire railway systems by implementing digital services.

Proactive maintenance with advanced analytics

Our solution facilitates diagnostic and predictive maintenance by identifying trends in data using a system of algorithms and a uniquely-tailored, open-source platform. It leverages the extensive in-house experience we have in advanced analytics, machine learning techniques and algorithm integration.

Able to remotely monitor infrastructure assets in real-time, the system learns when a unit may need servicing, thus helping our customers to avoid malfunctions and breakdowns by predicting failures before they happen and increasing efficiency.

Accessibility is key

We provide a unique user experience based on interactive digital maintenance via a user-friendly ‘Human Machine Interface’ and efficient alarm management that can be adapted to each customer’s needs. Our solution produces digital maintenance reports that are easy to extract and analyse. We safeguard digital continuity by establishing an interface between our customer’s own business process management system and our efficient maintenance information system.

What we have learned in recent years is that the absolute priority of our customers is the ease of use of our technology. No matter how innovative our solution is, we need to ensure an agile way of working. One of the first things we implemented in our solution is availability as a mobile app and web interface, accessible on- and offline and on site or, safely and securely, via a cloud service.

Alstom – industry-leading platforms for enhanced efficiency

Alstom today provides comprehensive, industry-leading data platforms that support entire rail networks with actionable intelligence. The resulting analytics provide our customers with a big-picture overview, allowing them to significantly improve the availability of their systems. Our solution has proven to be both consistent and reliable – and we will continue to develop its software and functionalities to ensure enhanced availability and efficiency of our customers’ fleets and networks.
