Hitachi Rail and CFR SA to modernize Romania National Railway infrastructure with signalling and telecommunications solutions
Hitachi Rail announces the achievement of two major milestones in the modernization of Romania's railway infrastructure through the implementation and commissioning of advanced signalling solutions at the Ciulnița and Fetești railway stations.

These projects were carried out for the National Railway Company CFR SA, the administrator of Romania's public railway infrastructure.
Located on the European TEN-T Corridor 22 (Pan-European Corridor IV), the Ciulnița and Fetești stations play a strategic role in ensuring connectivity between Central and Eastern Europe along the Nürnberg – Prague – Vienna – Budapest – Curtici – Simeria – Brașov – Bucharest – Constanța route. The modernization project included complex railway infrastructure and superstructure rehabilitation works, civil engineering activities, upgrades to the power supply and overhead contact line systems, as well as the deployment of telecommunications solutions, including video surveillance, passenger information and public announcement systems.
A key milestone was achieved in December 2025 at Ciulnița station and subsequently in June 2026 at Fetești station with the successful commissioning of the new-generation ESTW/IXL L90 RO electronic interlocking system. Based on the Technology and Application System (TAS) platform and the IPR7.0 software version, this represents the first deployment of this technology within Romania's railway network.
The new ESTW/IXL L90 RO platform introduces enhanced connectivity through advanced components such as the Data Logger, supporting maintenance and diagnostics activities, and the Cyber Security Observer, designed to strengthen cybersecurity capabilities. It also enables faster system deployment and lower energy consumption, providing significant advantages in system implementation and lifecycle performance. This new system will deliver more accurate and timely travel information.
These successful commissioning activities mark an important milestone for Romania's national railway infrastructure, representing the transition from the SELMIS platform, which has served the national rail network for more than 20 years, to a modern and digital technology designed to support the future needs of railway transportation.
The project was developed and implemented in accordance with European CENELEC standards, meeting the highest requirements for railway infrastructure safety, availability, and reliability.
Through the achievements at Ciulnița and Fetești, Hitachi Rail and CFR SA reaffirm their shared commitment to modernizing railway transport and developing a more efficient and sustainable railway network, for the benefit of Romania's economy and mobility.
