Hitachi Rail Modernizes Nuremberg–Regensburg Railway Line

Following the completion of nearly six months of modernization work, the Nuremberg–Regensburg railway line has been fully reopened for regular train traffic. As a project partner, Hitachi Rail made a significant contribution to the technological renewal of this heavily trafficked section. The line is a central link in the European Rhine-Danube corridor for cross-border traffic to Austria and part of DB InfraGO's plan to renovate over 40 rail corridors by 2036.

Technical Implementation and ETCS Preparation
To ensure more stable operations, higher capacities, and greater flexibility, Hitachi Rail's measures included the upgrading of eight existing electronic interlocking systems and comprehensive signaling adjustments along the route. Additionally, the control and operating system in the Munich control district (including the Neumarkt sub-center) was migrated, and a new "ETCS-ready" (European Train Control System) axle-counting system was installed. Project Manager Hannes Beck emphasized that the new command, control, and signaling technology forms the crucial foundation for future digital upgrades.

Additional Context: Technical Specifications and Strategic Background
This section provides technological and strategic background not included in the original announcement.

The integration of ETCS-capable axle counters and modern electronic interlockings is a decisive step toward interoperability in European rail transport, as they form the long-term basis for replacing older national train protection systems such as the punctual train control system (PZB). The modernization fits into DB InfraGO's overarching strategy to gradually expand the heavily stressed existing network into digital high-performance corridors. Hitachi Rail, which competes in this segment with providers such as Siemens Mobility and Alstom, has also been contributing its command, control, and signaling expertise to the renovation work on the adjacent Obertraubling–Passau corridor section since June 2026.
