The Purple Line, north of Washington DC

The “Purple Line”, a 26 km tramway line, is one of the most ambitious rail PPPs ever carried out in the United States. Served by 21 stations, the line will connect Prince George and Montgomery counties, on the outskirts of Washington D.C. The route was designed to interconnect all the lines converging on the federal capital. Thus, the Purple Line connects the red, green and orange lines of the existing Washington DC metro network, commuter trains (operated by MARC), regional links (operated by Amtrak) and local and regional buses.

Egis, as Independent Engineer on behalf of the concessionaire (Purple Line Transit Partners) and the authority (Maryland Department of Transportation/Maryland Transit Administration), will review the final technical plans and submissions and conduct on-site technical inspections, with a view to commissioning the line at the end of 2027. The dedicated team includes LRT (Light Rail Transit) technical experts based in the United States, Canada and Europe.

The Gatineau-Ottawa tramway

Ultimately, the new 24 km tramway line, with 37 stations, will connect the west of Gatineau (Quebec) to the city centres of Gatineau (Quebec) and Ottawa, the National Capital of Canada, while providing an innovative and sustainable transport alternative in a context of population growth in the region.

The Porteur Group, which Egis forms alongside SYSTRA Canada (agent) and EXP, was awarded the professional, technical and multidisciplinary services contract by the Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) for the project. As part of this contract, worth a total of CA$114 million, the Porteur Group will support the project office during all phases of the tramway project.

Egis will mobilize its expertise in the following missions:

Preliminary studies (in collaboration with SYSTRA Canada and EXP): infrastructure, systems, environment and geotechnics.
Infrastructure design
Project management: design and upgrade of the portage bridge
Tramway systems: traction, safety and design of the maintenance center

Egis’ rail expertise serving the North American continent

These two major programs complete the list of major rail projects on which Egis is already mobilized throughout the world in general and in North America in particular, thus reaffirming the Group’s position as one of the world leaders in the rail industry, and strengthening its presence in the dynamic North American market. By continuing to intervene in key and critical sectors such as low-carbon transport, Egis is also continuing to deliver on its commitment to be a driving force in the sustainable development of the region’s infrastructure.
