What has been holding back the wider adoption of automation in the rail industry? And what can be learnt from recent advances in driverless technology made by the automotive sector?
Though automation can deliver significant improvements in service efficiency and safety, its application in the rail environment raises complex technical challenges and often provokes strong ethical debates.
