ScotRail First TOC to Publish Real Time Train Data

ScotRail has become the first train operating company in Britain to publish data on the types of trains and their carriage lengths in real time.

The Scottish operator has joined forces with Realtime Trains, a rail information provider, to give passengers live information on what carriages along with which of its rolling stock its services are running.

Passenger can either visit the Realtime Trains website or the ScotRail app to find out how many carriages a train will have and how busy a particular service is. A feature for train fans is that the website will tell them the British Rail Class number of the trains in use.

Anne Gray, Customer Information Strategy Manager, ScotRail, said:

“Keeping our customers informed in real time is key to improving their experience travelling with ScotRail.

“We are committed to finding new ways to provide even more information and this partnership will give unprecedented access to real time data.”

Users can find information about past trains as well as future trains. If they want to know what kind of train they travelled on, they have seven days to check this information. To find out what services are running in the future, they can search 90 days ahead.
Tom Cairns, Realtime Trains, Owner, said:

“I'm delighted that ScotRail have agreed to be the first passenger operator to publish this data.

“This has long been one of the most commonly requested pieces of information, from both commuters and enthusiasts alike, so it is great to be able to make this available online, on demand.”

Passengers throughout Britain can use Realtime Trains for train information because it uses Network Rail’s open data service. However, they will not be able to find out about what rolling stock is used on a particular service.
